Self-Expression is Your Gift to the World

Desire To Share

Chances are the first inkling you had of a calling to do something new, or great, or different came to you in the form of a desire to share. You want the world and the people in it to be better in some way. Whatever shape your next thing takes, you are probably looking to make a positive impact. Since you want to share it, you know you already have it within you. You can’t share what you don’t have.

Release Your Blocks

Even when you have already received the gift you’re meant to share, you struggle and it may look like this:

  • You fear that you will be judged by others.
  • You doubt that you can really do this or that this is yours.
  • You feel guilty for not doing “real” work or for having something good.
  • You believe you don’t know where or how to start.
  • You worry that someone will take it away from you.

The anecdote to this negative thinking is to give yourself permission to feel, be grateful for, and express your gift. That’s the magic that allows you to share. Take the first steps, even if they’re wobbly ones. It gets better as you go.

Express Your Gift

Maybe you’ll write a memoir, create beautiful stained glass artwork, teach kids to read, start a business, perform on stage, or encourage someone else to grow. It’s your gift to express in your own unique way. That’s not to say that you have to do this alone. Probably you won’t. For the things in ourselves that we cannot see and the path that remains hidden to us, there are door openers and guides that serve us. Train yourself to be aware of them when they show up.

Just do it! Take the first step. That’s the only way to get past your fear. When I started my first business, which people told me would never succeed, I was fearful but I did it and created and ran a successful flight school for just under 20 years!

  2. I believe it is so important to learn to trust ourselves and to move forward from a place of inner knowing. Having done many things in my life, it usually started with just taking the first step and figuring a lot of it out as I went along. Currently I’m collaborating on two exciting creative projects and I honestly have no idea “how” they are going to happen. Working with other creative and service- oriented people, really fuels me and as I have gotten older I also realize the importance of working collaboratively. As someone who loves to fly solo and do everything myself, the community and collaborative model really appeals to me. I have also been fuelled by being told something is impossible, as I love seeing what is really possible in life. It is only ourselves, who get in our own way much of the time. Thanks for sharing this lovely post, Jane!

    • Thank you, Beverley, for stopping by and joining the discussion. It’s seems to defy common sense to take those first steps with no idea of how it’s all going to happen. But then the feelings of excitement and creativity – that’s the payoff for just going forward. Best to you, and keep the momentum going. I can’t wait to see how it all turns out for you.

AS a retired career counselor, I love encouraging others to find their ‘gift’ and go with it. It is more pleasurable to do something you love. I was fortunate to love helping people explore their career options and had no idea I was a creative person. My discovery of a hidden talent & passion has fueled me these past 8 years. And if making jewelry isn’t enough to light my day, learning and applying social media marketing at age 76 is keeping me young. I love to be the proof that it is never too late to start again.

    • Roz, that’s it exactly! I love that you discovered your hidden talent and passion, and that you jumped right in despite the “limitation” of age. I have seen your work, and you are contributing to the good in such a beautiful way. Many thanks.

As a Finance Professional who had coached and mentored dozens of juniors in 25 years, I still remember the day that I decided I wanted to do more and what was not possible within my then Avatar and decided to take a leap of faith with the Nike slogan – Just Do It. 🙂

I’m glad I did, Jane because in trying to help others discover their true gifts and talents, I unearthed a few of my own which had nothing to do with being a corporate finance eagle but more with creativity and self-expression. Apart from what I am doing now, this year has seen me finally publish 3 Kindle books on Personal and Professional Development which have been well received and my latest adventure of curating an art exhibition for an Abstract Expressionist.

    • It’s so encouraging to see a common thread in some of the comments posted, including yours, of discovering gifts and talents. Congratulations on publishing 3 Kindle books! I hope that your art exhibition goes well. I have been quite surprised by my own blossoming interest in art. I have attended more exhibits and visited more galleries in the last two years than the previous 60 years combined. You’re doing good things, and best to you.

Oh my, I completely resonate with this article. I went through that process many times working in a creative profession as a full time artist for many years. Then again when I made a career change into the health coaching industry. And now I find myself there again as a new author and public speaker.

    • Thank you, Melanie. I’m so glad that his post resonates with one who has been there. It sounds as though you are doing an awesome job of expressing your gifts. Keep going, and best to you.

  6. Great inspiring post. You gave me something to think about. I particularily like what you said, “anecdote to this negative thinking is to give yourself permission to feel, be grateful for, and express your gift.” I think it is easy for us to stop ourselves. But if we have passion to do something nothing will stop us. Thanks for sharing.

Jane is my sister and I’m proud and honored to have had her guidance through 50 years worth of living for me. Now Jane is leading adults and continues with children to impart her special wisdom from a lifetime of learning and teaching. Keep up the great work, Jane.

  8. Good question! I have been thinking about this a lot lately. I am trying to create a system to help small business owners that will automate and assist in the daily admin activities so I can help the masses and not just a few. It’s just a thought right now but I am developing it.

    • It sounds as though you are thinking and doing, Sabrina. I know just what you mean when you say you hope to help many rather than a few. I feel the same in the new work I’m called to. Continued luck to you in the development of your ideas.

Expressing my spirituality through collage artistry is what I love to do. It is my passion along with my work. I love your site Jane, keep it up with the amazing work!

    • Thanks for stopping by. I’m anxious to check out your business, Pamela. I love being organized, but it doesn’t come easy for me. Congratulations on starting your business and basing it on what you already have within you.
